Keep your secateurs super-sharp with this specially designed sharpening whetstone. The #1000 grit is the perfect coarseness for regular use.
The bottom of the stone is slightly concave, for sharpening secateurs and curved blades. The concave curve of the stone fits the convex cutting blade of secateurs, making sharpening easy. Use the flat side of the stone for shears.
Soak the stone in water for about three minutes (until bubbles stop rising), before use.
Dimensions: 13.1 x 2 x 2.3 cm. Made in Japan.
Care + Use
How to sharpen secateurs:
- Before use, soak the stone in water until bubbles stop rising. Keep wet during use.
- Avoid dropping because the stone will crack.
- For secateurs, using the concave bottom of the stone, move back and forth across the large blade from bottom to tip.
- If sharpening straight blades you must use the flat side of the stone.
- Be gentle and don't use too much pressure.
- Remove the burr that builds up on the other side of the blade by turning the secateurs over and using the flat side of the stone to smooth.
- Tidy up the bypass arm by gently running the stone along the flat face to remove any build up.
- Clean and dry the secateurs before wiping with Camellia oil.
Tool Care:
With regular use and over time, carbon steel blades can stain, lose their sharpness and eventually rust. To get the most out of your secateurs, clean and sharpen as follows:
- To clean: Use a Crean Mate and water to remove any leaf resin or rust. Dry them and wipe with Camellia oil. Store in a dry place.
- To sharpen: Use a Niwaki Sharpening stone. (For general sharpening, use #1000 grit). For best results, sharpen every couple of weeks.
