Care + Use

Safety:

Ensure that you use and store your secateurs responsibly, with care and out of the reach of children. By law, we are not permitted to sell blades to anyone under the age of 18.

Use:

The good thing about Japanese carbon steel is that it’s hard and sharp. However, this also means it can be more brittle than some people are used to. When cutting, we recommend that you:

  • Cut diagonally rather than straight across a branch, so that you cut along the plant fibres.
  • Keep an eye on maximum cut dimensions and avoid going over these.
  • Use the base of the blades for larger cuts, rather than the tips.
  • Don’t cut hard materials such as metal, wire, stone or plastic as these can damage or chip the edge of your blades. Hard woods and bamboo can do the same.
  • Don’t twist or apply uneven pressure.

Care:

With regular use and over time, carbon steel blades can stain, lose their sharpness and eventually rust. To get the most out of your secateurs, clean and sharpen as follows:

  • To clean: Use a Crean Mate and water to remove any leaf resin or rust. Dry them and wipe with Camellia oil. Store in a dry place.
  • To sharpen: Use a Niwaki Sharpening stone. (For general sharpening, use #1000 grit). For best results, sharpen every couple of weeks.
